One event on Saturday, December 8, 2018 at 3:00pm
Thankfully, the cultural taboos around talking about death and other end-of-life topics seems to be shifting. More Americans are openly discussing the medical, spiritual and financial aspects of death, as evidenced by several New York Times bestsellers on the topic, and the fact that or Death Cafe series always “sells out.” It’s out of this rising tide of curiosity that The Insight Shop is happy to bring you the Death Tour! We’re assembling a variety of experts in various fields of end-of-life care to share their knowledge and stimulate conversations.
We hope you’ll join us for one or all of these offerings… Those who’ve attended our previous events have found that intentionally confronting their mortality is one of the most life-affirming activities. The cost of these offerings is nominal, and supports the administrative efforts that go into planning such events. If you are unable to pay the fee, please contact us. We welcome everyone, whether you’re hesitantly dipping your toe in the water on this topic, or have already gone off the deep end!
Ask an Undertaker: Saturday, October 27th from 3:00-4:30pm
What’s involved in embalming a body? Is it possible to attend a cremation? Does a funeral home have to be involved in the disposition of a body in Virginia? And all the questions you have, but don’t have anyone to ask! Cathy Younkin and Rachel Green of Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home are coming by to answer all of your questions. They’re both compassionate, funny, and deeply committed to providing personalized care for each person and family.
What’s a “Green Burial?”: Sunday, November 18th from 1:00-2:30
More and more Americans are interested in being buried in the same manner in which they lived – with care for the environment and the future of the planet. Yet many cemeteries are not set up for this type of burial. Vern Conaway from Holy Cross Abbey’s Cool Spring Natural Cemetery in Berryville, Va. is coming to answer your questions about what’s involved in green burial and help you determine if it’s the right choice for you.
Behind-the-Scenes Tour of Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home: Saturday, December 8th from 3:00-4:00pm
For the mortally curious… Join us for a “behind-the-scenes” tour of a full service funeral home. We’ll meet as a group at Fairfax Memorial, and funeral director Cathy Younkin will give us a full-access tour. In addition to the public areas and the casket and urn show room, we’ll get to visit the embalming and prep rooms (minus the bodies, of course!), and the on-site crematory. Learn about the instruments and machines involved in modern death care, and how things have – or have not – changed over the years.
